Digital Security

If you are cheated, harassed, or impersonated online in Bangladesh, the law gives you remedies. Online fraud, identity theft, and the misuse of someone’s photos or identity are punishable offences under the Cyber Security Act 2023 and the Penal Code 1860. Acting quickly to preserve evidence is the most important step.

What should I do if I’m defrauded online?

Act fast and preserve evidence. Take clear screenshots of the chats, profiles, transactions, and payment records, and note dates, phone numbers, and account details. Report to your nearest police station or the Cyber Tribunal, and you can also seek help from the police Cyber Support unit. Online cheating can be prosecuted under both the Cyber Security Act 2023 and the cheating provisions of the Penal Code 1860.

Is using someone’s photo or identity online a crime?

Yes. Misusing another person’s identity, impersonating them, or publishing their photos without consent to deceive or harm is a punishable offence under the Cyber Security Act 2023. This includes fake profiles, identity fraud, and sharing private or intimate images. Victims can report to the Cyber Tribunal and ask for the content to be taken down.

How and where do I file a cyber complaint?

File your complaint as soon as possible — delay can mean lost evidence. You can report to the nearest police station, the Cyber Tribunal, or the police Cyber Crime / Cyber Support units, bringing your preserved screenshots and records. Keep copies of everything you submit. For urgent harm such as leaked images, you can also request emergency takedown through the authorities.
